Following the angel, our party found its way behind the waterfall, to an ancient cave temple still laden with withered offerings and a stream of blood. In the primary cavern, they finally came upon the river goddess herself, injured and dying inside a natural pool. Much to their surprise, the angel immediately began attacking his mistress.

Thus began a disorienting encounter in which celestial energy shifted our heroes in and out of Dream, a timeless realm of magic and divinity. While Raist, Ivellios, and Rowan tried to stop the seemingly confused angel, Kvothe and Torinn spied a familiar pair of golden eyes in the darkness behind the goddess.

Misery-Loves-Company, the demon from the dam, had taken up roost in the cavern, gleefully feasting on the pain of the lovers' quarrell. Attacks on him only caused him to laugh, as did Ivellios' healing of the goddess. Raist and Rowan were struck down by the angel for interfering, Torinn was mind-controlled by the demon, and when Kvothe finally reached Misery inside Dream, all he found was a blackened log.

With some trial and error, the party realized the demon's trick: he and the goddess had switched appearances. The angel was actually attacking Misery, and Kvothe had found the goddess' cage. Freeing her, she and the angel destroyed the demon and were finally reunited and gave thanks to their rescuers.

The party returned to town as under-appreciated heroes, sure to be drawn back together someday when they were needed, each with a lingering anxiety about what they'd seen on their adventure.
